As you might already know I’ve been using Skillshare for the past 2 years both as a teacher and as a student. Here is an overview and review of the platform in case you’re interested in using it to level up your existing skills or getting to know a completely new subject.
What is Skillshare?
Skillshare is a digital platform where you can find tens of thousands of online courses. All of them are taught by real-world experts, creators, entrepreneurs, and professionals.
What can I learn on Skillshare?
Skillshare covers a variety of different subjects such as:
- Technical Subjects – from Web Development to Search Engine Optimisation.
- Creative Topics – from photography to hand-drawing and digital illustration.
- Writing – how to create business texts, self publishing and creative writing.
- Business and Entrepreneurship – from basic freelancing to business project management.
- Programming – from app development to data science.
- Lifestyle Courses – covering everything from cookery to language learning.
Since there are thousands of Skillshare courses to choose from, I’m sure you’ll be able to find a relevant course for you. Most likely even more than one.
Skillshare works on a subscription model. You pay a fixed fee per month or per year for unlimited access to every course and workshop on the platform. This differs from other online platforms where you usually sign up and pay for every individual course.
Skillshare costs £7 per month if you pay annually up-front (so £84 annually) or £13 per month if you prefer to pay monthly. And the best part is that there are 14 days of free trial!
The courses are both easy to find and easy to match to my goals. For each course there are always descriptions, reviews and project outlines that help me understand quickly whether or not the course will meet my needs.
Accessing the courses is very convenient and because Skillshare classes are pre-recorded, you can learn on your own time and at your own pace. The courses are in video format and tend to be very high quality (good sound quality and good camera work) and Skillshare classes are self-paced, meaning you watch the videos and complete the assignments and lessons whenever you want. Your progress is saved within each course so you can pick up where you left off each time you return.
To help you choose the right courses, Skillshare shows you an introductory video that the instructor has recorded and shows you how many students are enrolled.
The courses are broken up into “chapters” as short videos, which means I can easily replay parts of the course where I feel I have more to learn. This ease of jumping back and forth between content helps me get the most out of the course.
You can also read reviews left by students who have gone through the course in the past.
Why I like learning on Skillshare
Becoming a Skillshare Premium member gives you UNLIMITED access to ALL courses. So you don’t have to pick and choose what you want to learn and you never have to worry if you’re making a mistake by signing up for a class.
You could go through multiple courses on different topics if you want to learn a few things at once. For example, you could study how to take beautiful photographs and also photo editing, and marketing strategies too, creating a very comprehensive skill set that you could then use to start a freelance career in this field.
Also, one big benefit to unlimited classes is that if you join a course and don’t really love it, you can just find a different course or teacher to learn that topic from. No regrets and no wasted money.
New and varied content
The vast amount of new content that is added to the platform on a weekly-basis is enough to keep anyone engaged. Whether you want to pick up a new skill or master a hobby, you can easily find dozens of opportunities to level up your existing knowledge.
Free trials available
Skillshare offers free Premium trials, giving new students a chance to “try before they buy”. In the past, it has offered 2 month free trials while right now, Skillshare offers 14 days of free Premium access, which I found enough to enrol in multiple courses and complete one or two.
Skillshare mobile app available
You can access Skillshare from your computer/ laptop via its website but even from your tablet/phone thanks to the Skillshare app. The best part? You can sync your progress in your selected Skillshare courses across all devices, be it your computer, phone, or tablet.
Students who are enrolled in a Skillshare course can interact with other students to share tips, talk about progress, answer each other’s questions, etc.
So along with learning from your computer or phone, you’ll have a chance to join a community of people who are interested in learning the same topics as you are. This will help you stay motivated and could even turn into networking opportunities for you.
Having a platform that gives me the chance to learn just for fun is a good enough reason for me to say that Skillshare is worth it. The huge variety of topics and the ability to connect with others, including experts in your desired fields of knowledge, makes the £7 a month fee a great deal.
I would really recommend anyone to give a go using the 14 days free trial and see how you like it. If it’s not for you, you can cancel your subscription at any time.
