THE BEST STAIRCASES YOU CAN FIND IN… | HELSINKI, FINLAND |

Who goes for a staircases hunt when visiting a city? Well I can tell you, if you don’t you’re missing a lot.

Sometimes you need to be prepared and know where the coolest and most unique are located (and really often they are hidden in residential or private buildings) but sometimes they are part of a museum or a shopping centre so easily accessible for everyone.

Personally I always look for them when I plan things and places I want to see before I leave for my destination. And these are things that you can’t find in any travel guide so it can be a bit tricky. My main sources are Instagram, because who knows better than locals or travellers who have been there before me, and I’ve recently discovered that 500px can be a really good place to find inspiration and less popular hidden spots.

So here you have some of the best staircases I’ve found in Helsinki.

  • KIASMA – MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART –

            Mannerheiminaukio 2, 00100 Helsinki

  • STOCKMANN – SHOPPING CENTRE –

  • RAVINTOLA PORTHANIA

Yliopistonkatu 3, 00100 Helsinki (in the Restaurant Porthania)

  • HELSINKI UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

            Kaisa-talo, Fabianinkatu 30, 00014 Helsinki
  • FORUM – SHOPPING CENTRE –

            Mannerheimintie 14–20, 00100 Helsinki

  • AINOA – SHOPPING CENTRE –

            Tapionaukio 4, 02100 Espoo

This last one is not properly located in Helsinki but in Espoo, the second largest city in Finland.  It’s worth a visit.

Hope this small “architecture-travel-guide” can be enjoyable and useful for staircases-lovers as me. It always takes quite a lot of time to find these places so I think it can be something helpful. Let me know and I can make tons more!

  1. Nice photos! A small amendment: Porthania is mainly a university building with five large auditoriums and ten smaller ones. The student restaurant is just a small part of building so it is a bit misleading to call it “Ravintola Porthania” (“Restaurant Porthania”).

    1. Thanks a lot Joonas, I’m glad you like my photos! You’re right, the staircase is in the restaurant part of the building. I put the address thinking it should have been okay but yes let’s be extra clear, I’ll follow your suggestion 😉

    1. Oh that’s nice! I didn’t know about it, I’ll go and check it for sure next time I’ll come to Helsinki. Thanks for the suggestion Jarkko! 🙂
